Long weekend’s in Russell
I’ve been to Russell four times now and that’s coming from someone that doesn’t like to go back to the same place twice! If that doesn’t speak volumes…
I love this place because as soon as you catch the car ferry across the bay it feels like you're entering a place where time stands still. It holds a lot of beauty, history and options for many adventures too! It’s one of those places your sad to drive home from.
For those looking for a quiet weekend away filled with endless walks, good food and a bit of history here’s my top walking guide to this little gem…
Russell Town - Jims Walkway -Tapeka Point
Spend the morning walking from Russell town up to the flagstaff and down Jim’s walkway to Tapeka point where you can fish, swim and enjoy a picnic before heading back into town for a glass of something cold afterwards!
Distance: 7-8 km’s return
Difficulty: Moderate
Tips: Take your camera the views from the flagstaff are the best on the island.
Long Beach
Walk from the town out to long beach and spend the afternoon unwinding and taking a dip in the ocean there.
There’s a coffee cart that sells iced frappes & sometimes a tip top van.
We opted to fish off the rocks at the end of the beach at high tide and caught a few small snapper which we released back!
Distance: 2.5 km’s return
Difficulty: Easy
Top tip: Take your fishing gear or an inflatable for the ocean!
Okiato to Russell Walkway
One long full-day coastal track from Russell or Okiato stop either end for lunch then walk back the same way or catch the ferry either end to finish your adventure and return home. Lots of bush & coastline to bask in!
Distance: 9.5 km’s (19km return)
Difficulty: Moderate - Hard
